Road traffic injuries are the ninth leading cause of death globally, claiming the lives of more than a million people each year on the roads (WHO Global Status Report 2015). Experience shows that dramatic success in preventing road traffic injuries can be achieved through concentrated efforts and evidence-based initiatives targeting road safety management, strengthening and enforcing road safety policies, increasing public awareness and building the capacities of key stakeholders, including civil society organizations, to prevent road crashes and to provide timely and technically sound post-crash response.
